Do You Hear What I Hear?

Pistol Pete Maravich

by Clark (bio)

Ever since the 6th grade I've been a big fan of Pistol Pete Maravich. I had a good friend whose father would religiously teach him the basketball skills found in Pistol Pete's basketball instructional videos and I often found myself imitating his moves (not even a fraction as good as he could do them). A gal I dated gave me this book quite some time ago, but I'd never cracked it open until just recently. Glad I did. Pete had an interesting life. I took the book to work a few times to read during my lunch break and it created a few lively conversations. There are Pistol Pete fans that come out of the woodwork when you least expect it.

Ave Maria

by Clark (bio)

The other day I decided to take advantage of the warm weather and go out for a walk around the city. I am still getting my bearings around this new town and want to make it a habit to just get out and walk and explore. I came across this mural while out and about. You can read up on the mural, as well as view a short video, here. If you have a chance to walk around Salt Lake City be sure to trek on over by 150 South and 200 East and you'll be sure to see it.

MMM Style: Red Wing Boots

by Clark (bio)

Before: Don't know if you know this, but if you take your Red Wing boots into their store, they'll give you new shoe laces and oil the leather for free. Not a bad deal yeah? I got these 1975-era Irish Setter Red Wing Boots the other day and took them in for their latest refurbishing. I decided to get them re-soled as well. Shoes or clothing don't really get me going, but I must say I'm pretty pumped to get these back in a week.

After: I got my boots back. I'm quite happy with them. They now have new soles, a new layer of polish, and some crisp clean laces. I'm gonna have these things for the rest of my life, no doubt about it.

MMM Movies: Linotype

by Clark (bio)

I'm looking forward to seeing Linotype: The Film. Apparently Thomas Edison called the machine the "Eighth Wonder of the World". If that doesn't get your attention you should go back to watching cat videos on youtube or something weird like that.

A Day For Couples

by Clark (bio)

So I don't have a lover. Oh well. I'll live vicariously though this random couple that I happened to document last spring while visiting Chicago. I had a little bit of free time to get away from the Midwest Political Science Association Conference (I was there because I helped out with a little research with one of my professors on a paper he presented there) and found myself walking around Millennium Park. I recklessly positioned my camera to take a timelapse of the incredible sculpture known as Cloud Gate and happend to catch this lovely couple enjoying the warm weather and lack of wind at the park that evening.

With the help of my dear friend Nellie I was able to put some music to this captured moment. Thanks again Nellie and thanks Rand for taking a handful of college students to Chicago so we could eat at all the best restaurants I mean go to the Political Science Conference.

The Goodwin Project

by Clark (bio)

I just came across this little teaser video about a young family embarking on an around-the-world trip over the course of this next year. They are a surfing family from Kauai with a knack for finding the good in the world. I must say I'm jealous of their project and wish I could join up and be some type of film crew helper-outer or something. So far they have hit up Iceland, Ireland and Israel. Follow them via their blog. I'm looking forward to the finished project but in the meantime their travel blog will tide me over. I need to find me a wife that is down for this sorta jazz. I can't think of a better way to see the world. Disagree with me all you want but I'm as serious as a heart attack.

The John Muir Trail

by Clark (bio)

As winter approaches, why not look back at what other people did this summer. It couldn't hurt to start planning the summer of 2012's adventure list. Hiking all two hundred and some odd miles of the John Muir trail is on my list of things to do in the not too distant future. In the meantime, this well-made video can serve as a motivational advertisement for future mountain expeditions. Click here for more info.

TED: Louie Schwartzberg

by Clark (bio)

I like coming across inspiring commentary from speakers on TED. This one particularly stood out to me. The footage of hummingbirds, bats, and bees is some of the most amazing I've seen. You can tell he isn't a pro at speaking, but that doesn't mean he can't give a powerhouse presentation. This little video reminds us how mother nature is incredibly complex. The footage this guy captures blows my mind. Here is a link.

What are some of your favorite and most inspiring TED talks?

Guitar Wielding Ninja

by Clark (bio)

My buddy is the dude on the electric guitar dressed up like a ninja. His name is Evan and he wails on the guitar. Evan has always made fun of acoustic guitar goobers like the dude with the two gals by him who gets destroyed by the guitar solo, so when the opportunity to be in this commercial was proposed by our friend Phil, you better believe Evan was up for it. I've never tried the energy drink GungHo, but at least they have clever commercials.

Mordecai

by Clark (bio)

We found this little guy on the road a few months ago. He was unable to fly, having just left his nest. With none of his friends or parents around we decided to help him out and take him home. Usually we don't take in wild animals or get involved in their lives, but there are a lot of coyotes and badgers out here and we wanted to give him a good shot at growing up. We have a large cage in our garage that he has been staying in and we take him out and do flying exercises with him to help build the strength in his wings. We've identified him as a Swainson's Hawk. Quite an impressive bird if I do say so myself. It's been neat to see his growth over the past several weeks. We've been feeding him and getting him acquainted with his surroundings. I named him Mordecai due to his resemblance to another bird of prey featured in one of my favorite movies. Can you honestly name the movie (without Google) I'm talking about? I'll give you a hint: think German christmas trees.

Kinfolk Magazine

by Clark (bio)

Kinfolk is a thoughtful guide for gathering together as friends and family to spend worthwhile time in one another's company enjoying good food and constructive conversation. It's about staying in and creating your own atmosphere and experience rather than heading out to a restaurant and letting others make the moments for you. It's the ultimate creative source for tips and ideas on entertaining small groups, but its also so much more. I'm lucky enough to know several of the people behind the effort, including the editor. I've experienced first hand the creative abilities of these people and their goal of bringing others together. Head over to Kinfolk and take a gander at what's going on. You'll be glad you did.

Sometimes I Go To Antique Shops

by Clark (bio)

I got a 3/4 shell motorcycle helmet and a hurricane lantern for ten bucks each at the antique/random junk shop in Colombia Falls, Montana (first picture). I got two Pendleton wool shirts for 23 bucks in Babb, Montana (second picture) along with the coolest leather belt I've found since the one I wear nearly every day with bears and oak leaves on it. It deserves a post all by itself. All of a sudden I can't get enough of what Montana has to offer.

Summertime

by Clark (bio)

This is what Summer is all about. Hope yours is finishing great. Do yourself a favor and go jump in a crisp, cold, refreshing lake if you haven't had a chance yet. You still got time. You'll be glad you did.

Bon Iver

by Clark (bio)

If you're not familiar with Bon Iver then this is your lucky day. Honest music written by one of the most down to earth individuals I've ever seen perform live. His first album was written in a cabin during the winter months in Wisconsin, and his latest self-titled album was just released at the start of summer and is equally magnificent. I really like the first video but the second video is untouchable thanks to Stephen Colbert. I hope you enjoy.

National Parks

by Clark (bio)

This video was taken a few hours north of where I'm living for the summer in Banff. If you haven't spent much time this summer in any of North America's national parks, its still not too late. Make the most of your summer and get outdoors for a bit. I promise you won't regret it.

If you want to see unicorns you should head to Banff ... there is proof if you click HERE.

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins

by Clark (bio)

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins got together and created an incredibly remarkable album entitled Diamond Mine. From the start you can tell it's more than just music. It has sounds of people talking and glassware clanking in the background as the opening track slowly emerges from the atmosphere of a scottish cafe. I'm really glad I happened across this album from my wanderings on the internet because it's perfect to turn on and open a good book to. Calm and well thought out, the music is more of an experience crafted from Hopkins' arrangements and King Creosote's (Kenny Anderson) vocals collected over the years from various recordings. It seems those recordings from the past couple decades were created perfectly for the right moment to be released as this album. What mellow background music do you listen to as you read?

Photograph or Painting?

by Clark (bio)

This photograph looks like it could be a painting. The contrast with a bright orange sand dune as the backdrop to the dark snarled Camel Thorn trees is more than eye-catching. I came across this on Huffington Post and had to put it up. Frans Lanting took this while visiting Namib-Naukluft Park in Africa for National Geographic.
